Understanding the basic genetics of cat colours

What colours do you find on cats?

There are two basic colours of cats, black and red. These are called “dominant” colours. The colour of all cats relates to these two colours in some way, by changing the colour or covering
it up.

There is also a “dilute” of each colour. The dilute of black is blue. The dilute of red is cream.

What colour kittens will these cats have?

Remember that blue is the dilute of black, and cream is the dilute of red. A dominant colour can produce both dominant and dilute kittens, but a dilute colour bred to a dilute colour will only produce dilute coloured kittens.
